Le Marche, often an afterthought on our travels, is a region we’ve mostly passed through on our way to or from other parts of Italy. But don’t let my casual tone fool you—the couple of places we did stop, Fano and Senigallia, turned out to be delightful surprises.

Fano, with its ancient Roman walls and charming seaside vibe, offered a perfect blend of history and relaxation. Senigallia, known for its velvety sand beaches and vibrant waterfront, was equally captivating—though for us, it was just a quick stop for gelato and a loo break. (Because even road trips need a little indulgence.)

But let’s be honest: the real challenge of traveling through Le Marche wasn’t finding interesting places—it was making sure Gigia had access to dirt to hide her, uh, “discharges.” (Because nothing says “responsible cat parent” like scouting for litter-friendly spots to avoid attracting predators. Who knew road trips could double as survival training?)

Despite the logistical hurdles, Gigia took it all in stride. She explored Fano’s cobblestone streets with the curiosity of a whiskered explorer, sniffing out every nook and cranny like a furry detective on a mission. In Senigallia, she enjoyed her gelato stop with the poise of a feline food critic, though she seemed more interested in the gelato shop’s ambiance than the actual dessert. (Priorities, right?)

Le Marche may not have been our main destination, but its understated charm and unexpected gems made it a memorable part of our journey. And with Gigia leading the way, even the most overlooked regions can feel like an adventure. Who needs a plan when you’ve got a curious cat and a sense of humour?

Fano (PU)

We hadn't planned to stop in Fano - it was simply a convenient lunch break on our journey. Yet this unassuming seaside town reminded me why Italy never fails to surprise. Here, you could drop your map, pick it up blindly, and still land somewhere wonderful. Fano charmed us effortlessly. Ancient Roman arches framed bustling piazzas where locals debated over morning espresso. The salty Adriatic breeze mingled with scents of fresh seafood from harbor-side trattorias. On a whim, we ducked into a vegan cafe - hardly Gigia's natural habitat - yet she immediately commanded the room. While we sampled surprisingly delicious plant-based dishes, the entire staff became devoted subjects to her feline majesty.

Some of Italy's greatest gifts are these spontaneous moments. Fano wasn't our destination, but became one of those perfect, unplanned memories that linger long after the trip ends.

A truth reaffirmed: In Italy, even your pit stops become postcards. And Gigia, of course, remains the undisputed queen of any scene.

Ancona (AN)

Where the Adriatic meets rugged cliffs and hilltop villages, Ancona Province captures the essence of Le Marche in one dramatic sweep. This is Italy for those in the know - from the historic port city of Ancona, with its bustling harbor and golden Duomo whispering centuries of sea-faring tales, to the postcard-perfect coves of Monte Conero. Just south, the Conero Riviera dazzles with cliffside gems like Sirolo and Numana, while secluded Portonovo rewards the curious with its emerald waters. Venture inland and medieval villages reveal their charms - fortress-crowned Offagna, wedding-perfect Corinaldo, and Arcevia's castle-dotted hills hiding truffle treasures. The flavors here are as rich as the history: sip crisp Verdicchio with brodetto, the area's signature fish stew, or indulge in Ancona's rum-soaked bostrengo cakes, a sweet testament to the region's culinary pride. And then there's Gigia. Though her visit was just a teaser - a stolen gelato in Senigallia, a regal stopover at a spacious bar - our feline connoisseur left her mark. This is merely the opening chapter; she'll be back to claim these sun-dappled piazzas and fish markets as her own. This is authentic Italy without the crowds, where every meal feels like a secret and even passing cats become local legend. The Adriatic may whisper to sailors, but in Ancona Province, it seems to purr - and Gigia is listening. )
